LOCATION AND PARKING
Patrons arrive at the Out the Box Festival town (37 Orange street) and have access to free, safe parking with 24 hr Michaelis Campus security monitoring the whole venue. All theatres and venues are located on the atmospheric Michaelis and Hiddingh Campus town in the heart of Cape Town, with its 18th and 19th century nostalgic buildings. The Little theatre, now 75 years old, is one of the country’s oldest theatre venues. From arrival, this mini-town in the Company Gardens becomes a creative hub of fest goers, artists and creative activities.

THE VENUES

As the fest goers enter the festival town, South African culture envelops the air. There are three theatres, various outdoor performance spaces; the Labia film theatre, various workshop and conference venues and exhibition rooms all within a 200-meter radius. The Arena Theatre, Intimate Theatre and Little Theatre will play host to some of South Africa and the world’s top performers and visual magicians for ten days of magic and wonder. The Little Theatre is the heart of the festival, where patrons can purchase tickets at the box office, grab a drink at the bar, or a slice of delectable cake with a steaming coffee, peruse information boards and plan their next show. Vendors provide mouth watering street food for a quick bite between shows, or patrons can head along with artists and creative enthusiasts to the Bertram’s festival restaurant for delicious South African cuisine and conversation for both lunch and dinner daily.

Across the road, the Labia Theatre’s Africa screen will host Cape Town’s first fabulous stop frame, 3d animation and puppetry film festival. Viewers can attend screenings as well as fascinating talks by some of the artists themselves on the making of their films. There will also be exhibitions of the fascinating sculptural works used in the making of the films.

DAY TIME ACTIVITIES

Every day, patrons are invited to attend world-class creative workshops and talks. These are not just for practicing professionals, but also for the public and amateurs with a love for all things creative. Come and have your artistic taste buds inspired with workshops in dance, puppetry and cross-disciplinary creativity.

A two-day provocative conference crosses the border between thought and action as artists, thinkers, educators and the public meet to share and dialogue about what they are seeing and its place in South Africa and the world.

Shows are all day long for the ten days of the festival. Patrons can bring their families during the day to catch a world-class children’s production at the Little theatre. Exhibitions of children’s puppetry and various puppet workshops will be on offer. Vibrant student productions form the Active puppets showcase, a hit of the festival where puppetry for social development groups present their latest colorful creations.

THE EVENING SHOWS

The adult festival begins at five every evening. A multipass ticket provides access to four performances for a set fee, so patrons can plan their evening and move between shows, escalating in excitement, inspiration and enjoyment. One of this year’s highlights will be world-class wonders from French puppet company extraordinaire, Les Grandes Personnes, with a street parade of giant African puppets, and a powerful indoor theatre performance. Viewers can expect a wide range of professional interdisciplinary performances including dance, multimedia, puppetry and site specific performance art.

The successful Iqonga Platform evening is also a thrilling array of short form pieces by professionals experimenting between forms.

After a full day of inspired interaction, sharing and wonder, guests can grab another drink at the bar before heading on to the vibrant street life of Long Street.
